So maybe I "did" overindulge during the holidays ….

Dsc00877_2 For whatever reason, I felt rather indulgent these past few holiday weeks. Usually a savvy bargain hunter, I subscribed to the "life is short" theory and chose wines from every major area of Bordeaux in restaurants like Daniel, Bouley, and the fabulous Eleven Madison Park under the brilliant direction of new chef Daniel Humm (this is his 'starter dish' of scallops above).

Of course, I discussed them all with the sommeliers to make sure that they represented "value" despite their triple digit price. And they were great ...

But that was before I tired of trying out expensive new wines on New Years day and ordered a forty-something 2004 Palliser Estate Pinot Noir from New Zealand at Jean-Georges (incredible!) and a 2002 Caparone Cabernet Sauvignon Bien Nacido around the same price from the Santa Maria Valley that was off the charts.

So why am I saying all this? W. Blake Gray of the SF Chronicle has a terrific piece in which he describes his quest for post-holiday bargain wines. A must read!
