Playing nice

... it's so nice to hear about wine folk playing nice with one another! A wine lover, visiting Mornington Peninsula in Victoria (Australia) raves about the way he'd ask for recommendations from producers and would hear rave reviews about a competitor's wine.

"

I travelled down to the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria over the weekend and took in a bit of relaxation time at the wineries down that way.

One thing I noticed as I spoke to the winery owners was their willingness to recommend their competition when speaking about certain wine varieties that they were lacking.

‘So and so’, down at ‘what’s a name’ has a fantastic Pinot Noir that you just have to try”.

Thanks to the recommendation I had an even better day and I’m sure to be going back.

Often in business we are so busy competing against one another that we don’t stop to think how you could improve the reputation of our industry and therefore improving our business future."

I'd have to add that most Napa/Sonoma folks are this way as well. It's a small community, and I've always had the sense wine makers work together to make the area a safe place for their families and employees, and to encourage tourism and promote wines from the region as a whole. Thoughts?

  1. Absolutely agree .. just got back from a trip to Sonoma. Although many of the wineries I visited deserve recognition, Arrowood stood out as not only exceptional wine, but also a great hospitable staff .. who were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their grapes, vinification, and the valley. Great place to visit if traveling on RT12 just above Sonoma.
