Wines for Passover

Hosting a Passover dinner this year? Better start planning the wines you will serve right now, for this year you will find many affordable, quality wines to choose from. What you serve depends on if you are following a new, lighter, modern take on the traditional dishes (a la glossy magazines like Food & Wine) or have are remaining true to ancient family recipes that may be weightier or have some exotic spice.

If brisket is the star of your Passover feast, you may consider an Israeli wine such as Carmel Ridge Red Shomron 2007, with flavors that include figs, and black plums. Sourced from Samaria, this wine heralds a new release by Israel’s oldest winery. A dry red wine made mainly from Carignan, with a little Shiraz, Petite Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. ($19.99)

For aperatifs, you might consider White by Weinstock 2007, a fruit forward blend made in Calfornia that plays an exotic dance on your tongue ... ripe peach here, honeyed apricot there. ($11.99)

Both wines are exotic and affordable. Salute!
