Choosing That Special Bottle From a Wine Store Tasting ...
2007 Dos Aguas
So who would have thought Bordeaux in Long Island? The trend for creating Bordeaux style varieties is not new -- Chile may have been the first, California a market leading second, and now Long Island is getting into the act.
I first tasted Macari at my local wine store, where the Sauvignon Blanc could be sampled in an Enomatic machine. Surprisingly vibrant and crisp and affordably priced.
Now I am tasting Macari's "Dos Aguas 2007", a Meritage consisting of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Malbec. You will not notice the word "Meritage" anywhere on the label, as winemakers need to join an association of sorts and pay a hefty fee to be part of this trademarked association.
As with most Bordeaux style wines, I expect the percentages to change annually, and vintage variation to affect the flavors. Yet I really like what I am drinking now ... the wine is full and lush, a purple color and nose of rich ripe blackberries, blueberries and sun baked plums, followed by a dry palate with balanced acid and tannins, and a long finish of vanilla infused blackberries, loganberries, and black currants. Pair with steak, lamb, and for fish lovers, roasted lobster with roasted vegetables.
