Elyssia Pinot Noir
Did you realize that rose-colored sparklers is the trend of the moment? Freixenet has a new pink sparkler called Elyssia made from the Pinot Noir grape. It is a gorgeous color as you can see from the picture, and goes even better with a bouquet of valentine's day flowers.
Pinot Noir, it happens, is "legal" for sparkling wine production in Spain, and this wine is delicious with flavors of raspberry and and blackberries, perhaps due to the additon of the native Spanish grape Trepat.
When I was in Barcelona a few years back (and right in the middle of my sparkling wine examination for the WSET diploma) I was so curious to see the operations of a Cava producer I hired a private car to take me to Freixenet. My guide - a woman who had never been to America yet spoke excellent English - showed me the entire facility which is aboslutely enormous.
The winery is over an hour outside Barcelona and a gorgeous drive. Students of wine will enjoy seeing the low hills en route, as terroir is so important in terms of the ripening of the grapes. Enjoy Elyssia sparkler and have a great V-Day!
