Dinner with Negociant Becky Wasserman in Burgundy

becky and visitor... so it's not often that one has dinner in a space that was formerly a stable.  That is, unless one is in Burgundy where the chic restaurant Ma Cuisine is built on the grounds of a former royal stable, and the very warm and welcoming home of negociant Becky Wasserman -- in a charming village outside the city -- was originally built to shelter animals hundreds of years ago.

If you love and collect Pinot Noir and grower champagne you already know the Wasserman name, as she brings exciting wines to thirsty palates in New York and all over the world with her husband Russell and son Peter. I missed Becky's and Paul's educational seminar at La Paulee in NYC last year yet by and by hope to catch up.

Burgundy is a complex region to understand. Today is only Day 3 at Les Grands Jours, a fete of the 2008 vintage for the trade and journalists, and already the process of comparing wines made from the same plot of vines by different producers is exhausting. The possibilities are endless and differences in aroma and palate stem from when the producer decided to pick, natural or cultured yeast, fermentation in stainless steel or oak, battonage (stirring of the lees), and length of time in oak change the flavor incredibly.

Tonight at her charming home Becky and Russell prepared a delicious dinner to pair with some of the wines they represent. We started with Godme Pete et Fil Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Champagne, and moved on to an incredibly delicious Jean Noel Gagnard 1998 Chassagne-Montrachet that paired very well with Becky's delicious squash and lentil soup. Then two reds - a Dom Lignier Michelot Morey St. Denis 2001 and and Jacques Frederic Mugnier 1999 Chambolle Musigny "Les Fuees"

A fabulous evening with fantastic wines.
