First Annual U.S. Puglia Wine Week September 27 – Oct 2 2010
By Marisa D'Vari | September 27th, 2010 | Category: Italy, News | No Comments »"I really like this wine!"
Such were the exclamations of surprise at a trade tasting today when several enthusiastic producers brought their wine to New York for the first of what is sure to be many Puglia wine weeks.
What is a wine week? It's a way to swirl and sip your way through Puglia's best wines at top New York wine shops and restaurants, which will be serving specially priced menus and have the winemakers on hand to present the wines. You can find out more details here, but now I'd like to tell you a bit about Puglia.
Wine growing here dates back to antiquity, and wine from the region was well respected in the days of the ancient Romans. Today Puglia wines are well-respected again, thanks to producer's focusing their attention on lower yields and quality winemaking.
Today at the trade tasting I had a fantastic sip of a new-to-me grape called Bombino (great name, yes?) It was a delicius white wine, medium plus body, with refreshing acidity and minerality. It is grown in Daunia, an aria of Apulia that consists of tiny plots. It's "red partner" in the regio is a grape you probably are more familiar with, Montelpuliciano d'Abruzzo.
On Tuesday night I'll be having dinner at Convivo with representatives from Cefalicchio and I'll be sure to tell you all about it.
