All About Greek Wines

Have you tried a Greek wine recently? The news is that Greece is offering incredibly well made wines, very dry, citrus-oriented, and delicius with food. In New York last week, Steve Olson and Doug Frost MW / MS led a talk introducing various varieties, pairing them with Greek cuisine.

In a single action-packed hour, guests had the opportunity to learn about all the different grapes and compare them with one another, and also pair them with various dishes such as Greek cheese, bread, and a hamachi sushi among other classic Greek dishes and desserts.

While I wrote extensive notes on each wine - important as they come from different regions and islands, so it's like discussing Chardonnay from the Central Coast and the Sonoma Coast - if you are just getting into Greek wine the most important 'stamp' of Greek wine is its minerality, refreshing acidity, and notable flavors of citrus that pair well with fish and all salads.

The hope is that you may be able to find Greek wine at your local wine shop or favorite restaurant, as it goes with so many dishes and is affordable.

The names of the regions and the wines are unfamiliar, yet if you go to http://allaboutgreekwines.com  you can find a pronounciation key.

Just today, taking a blind tasting glass, I and another student guessed one wine to be Assyrtiko because of its lemony flavors, so Greek wine is definately popping into wine geek vocabulary!
