"We went to California for wine instead of gold!" said Freixenet CE0 Pedro Ferrer, here with his wife Begonia and other key executives in New York to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Gloria Ferrer sparkling wine brand from Sonoma.
The Ferrer family Cava (sparkling wine), Freixenet, began in Sant Sadurni d'Anoia. can read here, and Jose set up Gloria Ferrer in Sonoma in 1982. At the time, it was seen as a risky move, yet now Gloria Ferrer is one of the best known and best selling sparkling wines in the world, with increasing sales to China, Japan, and elsewhere.
The family history is quite dramatic, as Pedro's grandfather was killed in the Spanish Civil war, and his grandmother, Gloria, for whom the sparkler is named, had tremendous influence on the family operations.
Over a multi course lunch guests tried many of the library wines, including the Gloria Ferrer 25th anniversary Cuvee, the 2000 Carneros Cuvee, the Pinot Noir 2008, and many others.
