"So interesting to see the difference between the 04 and the 03!" exclaims a guest, tasting the two vintages of Campo Viejo Reserva side by side. Both are delicious, yet the 04 -- though younger -- has a certain elegance and refinement that goes hand in hand with the vintage.
"It was a fabulous September of warm days, cool nights, and wind to drive away moist air," says Alfredo Del Rio, the "Global Wine Ambassador" for Premium Wine Brands and tonight, representing Campo Viejo.
We are at Boqueria, a Spanish tapas place on 19th street in new york city, and it is hard to find a more authentic place to enjoy Campo Viejo wine with tapas.
The winery makes millions of bottles a year ... over a million cases of the Crianza Campo Viejo alone, that sells for about ten dollars in the United States. One of the interesting points of the evening is that the Crianza is produced using 90% tempranillo grapes, and 10% garnacha so it is fuller bodied and fruity, almost jammy, with that rich fruit taste accentuated by American oak.
By contrast the more elegant, more expensive riserva is made with 90% tempranillo, and 10% graciano which, like its name suggests, offers a more elegant silky mouthfeel and restrained fruit flavor. The wine is nicely set off by the 50/50 blend of American and French oak.
Alfredo is a fabulous individual, the perfect blend (no pun intended) between a winemaker and a PR person or expert copywriter in that he knows as much (more?) than a winemaker about every facet of the winemaking process, from clones to growing the grapes to vinification, yet at the same time he can explain the process in a way that is very easy to understand.
