Cave re-enactment at Ruinart

Always the high point of the year, Ed McCarthy, author of “Champagne for Dummies,” pulled out all the stops for a fabulous tasting of vintage treasures and brand icons. The 2002 Nicolas Feuillatte Palmes d’Or was exquisite … I had just visited the property.

The Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millenaires 1995 was just as delicious as it sounds. And the Krug Grand Cuvee absolutely unforgettable. When you review the list below, you can imagine how it felt to be there that afternoon, surrounded by the best respected bottles in the world and having only a few hours (and limited capacity) to partake.

Bruno Paillard was there in person and gave a brilliant talk about the region and his role in promoting dates of disgorgement.

Having just returned from a week in Champagne it was a reminder of my incredible experiences. For me, Champagne is incredibly magical, the perfect cuvee of the vignerons, the magnificent houses, the unforgettable chalk cellars (especially Ruinart and Taittinger and Charles Heidieck, the Chef de Caves, and the ghosts of the founders who gave their names to this exquisite wine.
