Tasting Notes January 27, 2014: Dama de Toro + Spanish Sons

Spanish Sons 2010 Tempranillo from Castilla Y Leon, Spain - very well made, easy drinking wine with gentle tannins and a pleasant smoky character.  Flavors of cherry and subtle tobacco and well balanced acidity and tannin.

***

Tasted three wines from Dama de Toro, from the Douro Valley in Spain.

Dama De Toro Malvasia 2012

One of my first white Riojas and so impressed ... gorgeous floral and ripe peach fruit nose, very refreshing wine with med+ acidity and incredible minerality. So soft and round thought a hint of old oak, yet pure stainless steel.  Really great pairing for lobster, seafood, salads. Great example and good solid winemaking ... the bush trained vines here are over 100 years old. Cool maceration at 5ºC for 12 hours before fermentation at 15-18ºC in stainless steel tanks.

Dama De Toro Reds ...

In any event, blind tasted and I eventually deduced they were indeed tempranillo from a hot climate, and the summers in Toro are among the hottest in Spain.

Actually blind tasted them ... an interesting activity as wines from Toro, even tempranillo, are different from the rest of Spain. One can possibly confuse them with a French Malbec because of the alcohol, wild berry fruit, violet, and licorice, and possibly even a Syrah from Australia. The wines were well balanced, and fruit-led, great with meals.

The two wines were the Dama de toro Crianza 2006 (a mix of Tempranillo and Garnacha) and the 2010 Tempranillo
