This week I’ve tasted some excellent wines!

2006 Wilson Cabernet Sauvignon

(USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley)  

color – purple, medium intensity, med trans

nose: med+ intensity, spice, black berry, black currant, oak
palate: dry acid med tannin med+ (full, rich) body med+ alc est 15 finish med+

On the palate: complexity, minerals, earth, oak, different levels of flavors and fruit (red, black)

Style note: A very good example of a California Cabernet Sauvignon that tries to represent its terroir, this well balanced wine offers layers of flavor and some real complexity. Enjoy with a well grilled steak. Can improve with bottle age 2 – 3 years. 

2008 Wilson Winery Zinfandel

(USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley)
color: purple, medium intensity, med translucent
nose: med+ intensity, intense spice, blue frut (sawdust soaked blueberries) red/black fruit
palate: med+ intensity, dry, acid is med+ tannin is med+ and fairly rough body is med alc is est15 finish is brandied cherries soaked in spice

color: purple, dark, jammy, med + intensity
nose: med+ intensity of concentrated ripe fruit: blackberries, blackc currant, a hint of mocha
palate: med+ intensity, dry, acid is med tannin is med (very smooth) body is med+ alc is est 13.5 finish length is med+

style note: Extremely well balanced wine with incredible concentration of black fruit (blackcurrant, cassis) and balance between fruit, acid, smooth tannin, and very hidden oak (vanilla touch), enjoy with steak. (8 views)

Style note: a big, rich, full bodied California Zinfandel with a rustic balance and sense of place and demand of terroir recognition. Great pairing with a charred grill steak.

2007 Wilson Winery Petite Sirah

color: intense purple, opaque yet does not appear jammy, color is true to rim
nose: pronounced intensity: very intense spice, jammy black fruit such as ripe blackberries, ripe black currant, a touch of red devil chocolate cake
palate: dry, acid is med tannin is med+ and very rich, smooth, and velvety body is med+ alc estimated 13.5 finish med+

Style note: Really delicious Petit Sirah with tamed red fruits, lively acidity, and a pleasing velvety texture that can pair excellently with steak and especially winter stews.

2007 Dierberg Syrah Estate Grown Santa Ynez Valley (USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley)

color: purple, med+ intensity, some translucency, tears fast to form and fall
nose: med – intensity, blackberries, black currant, a purple floral quality, a spice element
palate: dry, acid is medium (to med +) tannin is med and very smooth and well balanced, body is med alc is est 13.5 finish is med plus length

Style note: With its flavors of blueberry, vanilla, and underpinning of balanced yet riper black fruit, this is an elegant wine to accompany dishes such as braised meats and steaks. Very delicious!

 2006 Star Lane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

color: purple, dark, jammy, med + intensity
nose: med+ intensity of concentrated ripe fruit: blackberries, blackc currant, a hint of mocha
palate: med+ intensity, dry, acid is med tannin is med (very smooth) body is med+ alc is est 13.5 finish length is med+

Style note: Extremely well balanced wine with incredible concentration of black fruit (blackcurrant, cassis) and balance between fruit, acid, smooth tannin, and very hidden oak (vanilla touch), enjoy with steak.

2007 Star Lane Vineyard Merlot

color: purple, med intensity
nose: med intensity red/black fruits
palate: dry, acid is med tannin is med body is med alc is est 14.5 finish is med+

Style note: A very vibrant Merlot with concentrated red/black fruit (cherries, pomegranate, black currant, great balance, layers of flavor/nuance/texture, and would be terrific with either grilled meat or roasted salmon
