Tasting Notes 2/14/13

Just in time for Valentine’s day are some fabulous wines — at surprisingly, a really fabulous price!

Piccini Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2006

Piccini is clearly establishing itself as a key brand – though it has more than 130 years of tradition. Very impressed by their wines – this Brunello is 100% Sangiovese, a “traditional” Brunello with a “modern” touch in that at 7 years of age it is “ready” to be enjoyed and does not require further maturation (though it can be laid down for another decade). Flavors of rich ripe cherry and blackberry, very elegant with layers of flavor (dried fruits, eucalyptus, herbs, minerals).¬† Fab wine for any occasion that pairs with a variety of foods. $50

Piccini  Memoro Vino Rosso Italia NV

Very rich and sumptuous wine made from a variety of grapes (Merlot, Montepulciano, Nero d’Avola, Primativo) across several vintages and regions that spend a year in oak. The blend works and is really delicious with dark cherries, figs, and coffee. Can win an award for the art of the blend. Rarely tasted this quality at this price. $9.99

Piccini Prosseco DOC Vino Spumante Extra Dry

There is “prosseco” and then there is “prosseco” — meaning that though this style of sparkling wine (also the name of the grape) have different quality levels. This intense wine with a rich scent of apple, lemon, and grapefruit is of top quality. On the nose soft white flowers (acacia) and a tart citrus finish. Great with a variety of light starters or as an aperitif. $16
2010 Dry Creek Heritage Zinfandel – Sonoma County

A delicious dry Zin (old vine Zin!) with the rich fruit blueberry, raspberry, blackberry flavors – and spice from 18 months in French, American, and Hungarian oak (15% new). Very balanced and delicious. 88% Zin and 12% Petite Syrah. The balance was exceptional and the style very elegant and refreshing. $18

2011 Estancia Moscato

Rap stars love Moscato because of the happy, scented flavors of sweet peaches, honeysuckle, and orange blossom – this wine is more sophisticated than its Italian cousins with refreshing acidity and notes of jasmine, mandarin, and orange on the nose. Great as an aperitif and also to savor after dinner. Under $15

2011 Estancia Pinot Grigio

Fragraant aroma of white flowers, apple, and lime and racy acidity on the palate with a med+ finish of tart green apples. Bright fresh fruit and minerals. Sip as an aperitif or pair with fish or chicken. Under $15
